Issue #2: On the Circularity CircKit | November 2024
This month we explored the role of creativity within circular fashion design and considered whether secondhand really can replace fast fashion...
Can secondhand kill fast fashion?
From booming resale stats to big brands wanting a piece of the pre-loved action, Annabel Lindsay explains why the secondhand shift is positive, but part of a bigger picture...
Trendy vs Timeless: Why We Need Both…
The argument surrounding what makes a fashion piece ‘trendy’ versus ‘timeless’ feeds into a narrative that casts fashion-focused brands outside the classic, minimal aesthetic as inherently wasteful and ephemeral. We often associate the fashion industry with an insatiable demand for novelty, yet the flip side of this need for newness is an unparalleled potential for creativity and innovation. A quick browse on a fast fashion website for a party dress, for example, returns an array of possibilities, from length, cut, and silhouette to fabric, fit, and colour. Fashion’s charm and allure lies in its variety and possibility which means that an industry where every brand is focused on producing wardrobe basics simply wouldn’t work. Yet the fact remains that this constant churn of new designs leaves a devastating impact on the planet and its resources.
In our latest piece, explores the tension between ‘trendy vs timeless’ fashion. Does our current vision of timelessness inherently limit the scope for creativity? Is there a place for bold, expressive design in circular fashion?
Circular news we’re loving
HURR X Deliveroo Partnership
A partnership between Deliveroo and Hurr was not on our 2024 bingo card but it might just be one of our fave collaborations of the year.
The new service, launching initially for Central London’s Hurr customers, sets out to deliver fashion rentals directly to your door in as little as 20 minutes!
Now that’s what we call fast fashion!
Could we see more fashion rental or even same-day repair companies teaming up with delivery partners in the future? Watch this space.
Vestiaire Collective - Change Your Feed, Change the World
Vestiaire Collective has launched a 6-month educational programme, targeting one of fast fashion’s greatest weapons: influencers. The goal is to reshape the narrative around overconsumption, empowering influencers with the knowledge and tools to use their powers for good: inspiring their followers to make more mindful choices.
Teaming up with five influencers including Love Island UK alumni Yewande Biala, Vestiaire’s new program will take them through masterclasses with industry experts, interactive discussions plus an in-person trip to a landfill site. If anyone has the power to make circularity mainstream, it’s the creators we see on our feeds every day. We’re excited to see how this program impacts the type of fashion content we see and how followers respond! Less hauls, more creativity, please!
